U2, Live “Under a Blood Red Sky, ” 1983 on Island

I always thought of this as recorded at Red Rocks in Colorado, but with additional tracks from the Orpheum in Boston (“11 O’Clock Tick Tock”) and Rockpalast in Germany (all of Side B, “I Will Follow”).

There was a live video – Live at Red Rocks: Under A Blood Red Sky, which was the full Red Rocks gig – may be why I’ve always confused the two.

This is one of the records I keep multiple copies of. Early pressings included a 5:18 version of “The Electric Co.” that includes Bono interpolating some lyrics from “Send in the Clowns” – these were removed from later pressings due to rights issues, resulting in a 4:51 version of the song. (CDs and reissues also use this shorter version).

This copy, via the Record Exchange in Salem MA, is a Specialty Records Pressing with the longer “The Electric Co.”. (My other copy with the shorter “The Electric Co.” is also a Specialty Records Pressing but with metal work from Allied).

SVT, Extended Play, 1980 on 415 Records

San Francisco / Bay Area new wave / rock band including Jack Casady and (my former colleague) Nick Buck (from Hot Tuna) with Brian Marnell and Paul Zahl (who replaced founding drummer Bill Gibson, who went on to be in Huey Lewis and the News).

This was out of print for a long time but was reissued on CD in 2005, and a reissue of all of SVT’s work (“Always Comes Back – The Authorized Recordings”) was recently reissued in 2020 on Liberation Hall.

My copy via Aux 33 Tours in Montréal Québec. A bit surprised (but happy) to find a rare-ish Bay Area record in francophone Canada. I’ve since scored a second copy locally as well at the Record Exchange in Salem.

Steve Earle, Someday, 1987 on MCA

12-inch single with a presskit from 1987 – after the March 1986 release of Guitar Town. This was the second single from the debut album – including a live cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “State Trooper.”

My copy—via the Record Exchange in Salem MA—also included a one page Rolling Stone feature on Earle, but not I’m not sure if that was part of the original press kit or added by an earlier owner.

I’m a bigger fan of later Steve Earle than I am of these early records, to be honest, but I love seeing the early origins of his talent and how they tried to shape it into 80s radio markets.
