Crisi demografica in Cina
Too many taxes, fewer condoms are sold in China.
AGI - Too many taxes, and so sales of Durex condoms are down in China. Beijing has indeed abolished a tax exemption that had been in place for some time on these products, simultaneously tightening restrictions on their marketing.
The Government wants to relaunch a wide campaign to encourage birth rates. In detail, according to estimates prepared by Jefferies based on the company’s financial data and reported by the Financial Times, sales of the leading brand in the condom sector in China, owned by the Reckitt consumer goods group, fell by 5% in the country during the first quarter. This marked a sharp slowdown compared to last year’s sales growth, which in China had even exceeded 40%.
According to analysts, the reversal of the trend is largely due to the new regulations, which have led the dominant social commerce platform in China, Douyin, owned by ByteDance (the parent company of TikTok), to ban the marketing of condoms via live streaming.
Tax effects and price increases
Furthermore, at the beginning of the year, the exemption from VAT on condoms, which had been in place since 1993, was abolished. And so contraceptives are now subject to a 13% VAT rate. Durex could face further pressure due to the economic repercussions of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The tension in the Gulf has already prompted Malaysian Karex, which produces about a fifth of the world’s condoms, to increase prices by up to 30% due to the surge in production costs. And for Durex, it will inevitably be necessary to raise prices, thus further discouraging consumption.
Demographic crisis in China
It is true that the Dragon Country is experiencing an unprecedented demographic crisis, as the birth rate has fallen last year to historic lows: 7.92 million births, less than half compared to 2015.
The Government’s policies
For several years the Government has abandoned the one-child policy, instead inviting couples to have three children. For example, last year, state subsidies were introduced for parents of young children, thanks to which families receive the equivalent of $531 per year for each child under the age of three. And now the Government has turned its attention to contraceptives.

Share to BlueSky Share to TwitterDid you know that palm oil is one of the world’s most destructive crops, as it can only be harvested in tropical rainforest and peatland landscapes where the highest concentration of endangered species live? The majority of palm oil and soy is fed to farm animals that people eat. This is why palm oil is an animal rights issue. And it is for these reasons that palm oil is NOT considered vegan by animal activists. It may be a plant-based substance, but it is NOT VEGAN. Brands making cleaning products like PZ Cussons, Colgate-Palmolive, Reckitt and Unilever claiming vegan status are simply greenwashing extinction and ecocide!
