Meta reported Q1 revenue of $56.31 billion, beating estimates, and adjusted earnings of $7.31 per share versus the $6.79 forecast, while daily active people rose 4% year‑over‑year to 3.56 billion but fell more than 5% from the previous quarter, a miss attributed to internet disruptions in Iran and a WhatsApp restriction in Russia. Capital expenditures came in at $19.84 billion, well below the $27.57 billion expected, yet the company raised its full‑year capex outlook to $125‑$145 billion. Net income surged to $26.8 billion, bolstered by an $8.03 billion tax benefit, and headcount grew 1% to 77,986 despite an announced 10% workforce reduction. Meta highlighted its AI push, debuting the Muse Spark foundation model, and projected Q2 revenue of $58‑$61 billion, roughly in line with expectations.

NPR Topics: News | Meta will lay off 10% of its staff by John Ruwitch

AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information.

Meta announced it will cut 10 % of its workforce—about 8,000 employees—on May 20 and will freeze hiring for roughly 6,000 open positions, according to an internal memo confirmed by a spokesperson. Chief People Officer Janelle Gale said the move is meant to run the company more efficiently and offset large AI investments, acknowledging the difficult trade‑off for staff who have contributed meaningfully. The layoffs come as Meta ramps up spending on artificial‑intelligence infrastructure—forecasting up to $135 billion in capital expenditures this year, nearly double last year—while lagging behind rivals such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, and simultaneously scales back its Metaverse push, including a separate 700‑person cut in the Reality Labs division. At the same time, Meta faces significant legal challenges: a New Mexico jury found the company failed to protect young users from sexual exploitation, exposing it to potential penalties of up to $375 million, and a Los Angeles jury held Meta (along with Google) liable for a woman's mental‑health harms, awarding $6 million; the firm plans to appeal both cases amid other pending lawsuits.

Weekend Reading!

Someone at META FINALLY has seen the light in the VR tunnel and it is a dead train.

Meta recently announced starting on June 15, 2026, it will no longer be possible to build, publish or update VR worlds, and Horizon Worlds will not be accessible with VR headsets - the spaces will continue to be be available via the Horizon mobile app only.

This comes just a few weeks after Meta cut over 1,000 employees from Reality Labs, the unit responsible for the metaverse. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/03/18/meta-horizon-worlds-metaverse-vr.html

In 2018, I first wrote about how dedicated "VR Worlds" would be a #Fail and would be destined to be highly niche products and NOT be the world changing tech as claimed by proponents.

qwant news | Meta lays off hundreds more workers as Mark Zuckerberg pivots away from costly 'metaverse' push

Meta is laying off several hundred employees across key divisions—including Facebook and its Reality Labs unit—as the company restructures for an artificial‑intelligence‑focused future. The cuts come as Meta pulls back from its costly metaverse push, after pouring tens of billions into virtual‑reality hardware and software with limited payoff. By shifting resources toward AI and wearable technology, the firm hopes to chase faster growth and clearer returns as demand for VR headsets cools and investor enthusiasm fades.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg is driving the AI transition, saying earlier this year that 2026 will be “the year that AI starts to dramatically change the way that we work.” Teams are being flattened and AI tools are being deployed to boost productivity, with some affected staff offered alternative roles—though a few positions may require relocation. The latest lay‑off follows earlier reductions, including roughly 1,500 jobs eliminated in Reality Labs in January and a 5 % cut of the company’s lowest‑performing employees last year. Rumors that Meta could axe up to 20 % of its workforce this year have been dismissed as speculative.

Meta is also ramping up its AI‑related spending, projecting $115 billion to $135 billion in capital expenditures for the year—a roughly 75 % increase over the prior period—largely earmarked for data centers, servers and other infrastructure needed to power advanced AI systems. Operating expenses are expected to rise about 40 % as higher compensation is offered to attract technical talent. Since the start of the year the company’s shares have fallen nearly 10 %, trading around $598 per share at mid‑day Wednesday.
