He won a #Pulitzer for his Selected #Poems (1982), & found inspiration in #WaltWhitman & #Nature.

His #Poem "St. Francis & the Sow," begins:

The #Bud
stands for all things,
even for those things that don't #Flower,
for everything #Flowers, from within, in #SelfBlessing;
though sometimes it is necessary
