Extensive rave-era memorabilia collection to be auctioned by Bonhams for up to £80,000

A substantial private collection of rave and acid house memorabilia, assembled over 35 years by music producer and writer Rob Ford, is set to be auctioned by Bonhams with an estimated value of between £60,000 and £80,000. The archive includes around 17,000 items, ranging from membership cards and flyers to restricted guest passes, private invitations, badges, and historically significant ephemera linked to some of the most influential clubs in UK dance music culture. Ford began collecting after attending early all-night rave events such as Amnesia House in Donington, where he was struck by the distinctive visual culture of flyers and promotional material. He later built up the collection through discreet exchanges, often meeting contacts in car parks and purchasing items in cash transactions. Among the most notable artefacts is the first-ever business card from The Prodigy, as well as materials connected to iconic venues such as the Haçienda, Ministry of Sound, Shoom, Labyrinth, Raindance, Spectrum and World Dance. According to Bonhams specialist Claire Tole-Moir, the membership cards acted as “analogue passwords” to underground spaces, reflecting both exclusivity and creative graphic design trends of the period. She highlighted how the designs evolved over time, moving from playful pop art and surrealist influences to more cyberpunk and corporate aesthetics as the scene became increasingly commercialised during the 1990s. The collection also provides historical depth, including cards from influential venues such as the Four Aces in Dalston, which later became Labyrinth and hosted The Prodigy’s first public performance. Even earlier artefacts date back to 1874, illustrating the broader evolution of dance culture memorabilia. The archive, previously featured in a sold-out coffee table book, will be sold as part of Bonhams’ Sound & Cinema auction running online from 15 to 25 June.
