Swansea restaurant boss dishes up festive kindness with hot meals for homeless

The owner of Rasoi Indian Kitchen in Pontlliw and Rasoi Waterfront in SA1 delivered almost 50 freshly cooked meals on Wednesday 17 December to two city projects run by homelessness charity The Wallich.

The meals were shared at the Gorwelion Project on Gore Terrace and the Ty Tom Jones Project on Alexandra Road, both of which provide safe accommodation and vital support for people who have experienced, or are at risk of, homelessness.

“Christmas is about kindness”

Speaking about the gesture, Suki said:

“No one should feel forgotten at this time of year. Christmas is about kindness, and we hope that a warm meal helps bring some comfort to people who really deserve a moment of joy. Our staff were amazing as always — they jumped at the chance to get involved and we’re proud to continue to support our community in this way.”

Charity hails timely boost

Staff at The Wallich said Rasoi’s gesture offered a welcome lift at one of the toughest times of year.

Mark Winston, Area Manager for The Wallich, said:

“Christmas can be an especially challenging and emotional time for people who have experienced homelessness. Acts of kindness like this remind people that their community cares about them. We’re incredibly grateful to Rasoi for stepping in once again to support our projects in Swansea.”

Rasoi’s reputation for giving back

Rasoi’s ongoing commitment to community support has earned the restaurants a reputation for generosity, with regular backing for local charities and initiatives throughout the year.

Suki added:

“It really is our pleasure and ethos to give back to our local community, and we are so grateful to help a very deserving cause. We hope this helps to raise awareness of the excellent work being carried out by The Wallich here in our city — especially at this time of year.”

Rasoi Waterfront marks ten years with ten days of free dishes

Rasoi Waterfront, one of Swansea’s most celebrated restaurants, is marking its 10th anniversary this month with a special thank-you to customers, offering ‘10 free dishes over 10 days‘, from November 10th to 19th.

Over the past decade, the restaurant has become a cornerstone of the city’s vibrant food scene, renowned for its authentic Punjabi cuisine with a modern twist and a deep commitment to giving back, both locally and abroad.

Founded in 2011 by local brothers Suki and Jas Kullar, Rasoi began its journey with the opening of Rasoi Indian Kitchen in Pontlliw; bringing their family recipes of bold Indian street food to South Wales.

Following the success of their first venture, the duo launched Rasoi Waterfront in 2015 in Swansea’s SA1 development. The contemporary venue quickly earned a reputation as one of the city’s top-rated restaurants, seating over 180 guests across indoor and outdoor spaces, overlooking the marina.

Suki Kullar, co-owner of Rasoi Waterfront, said:

“When we started Rasoi, our dream was simply to share the flavours of our childhood with Swansea.

“Ten years later, that dream has grown into something far bigger than we ever imagined. Our 10-day celebration of free dishes is our way of saying thank you to everyone who’s been part of that journey.”

Community support has also been at the heart of Rasoi’s mission. Since opening, the restaurant has partnered with Swansea-based charities including Faith in Families and The Wallich, donating thousands of meals to those in need.

Beyond Swansea, Rasoi funds the Sikhi Sewa Mission UK, which supports a hospital in Punjab providing free medical care and essential community services. Each year, the restaurant also sponsors the education of 167 children, funding school fees, uniforms, and winter clothing in areas where state-funded schooling isn’t available.

Suki continued: “Every time someone dines with us, they’re helping to make a real difference, supporting local families, as well as those in need in need of health and education support in Punjab.”

Rasoi Named ‘Hospitality Business of the Year’ at Swansea Bay Business Awards

Rasoi, which has restaurants in Pontlliw and SA1, received the award at the glittering awards ceremony in Swansea’s Brangwyn Hall in recognition of its outstanding food and service as well as its commitment to giving back to the local community.

Being recognised as Hospitality Business of the Year in the whole of the Swansea Bay region is especially poignant for Rasoi, as this year, Rasoi Waterfront in SA1 celebrates 10 years in business, having opened in 2015 following the success of its sister restaurant, Rasoi Indian Kitchen in Pontlliw.

The recognition shines a light on Rasoi’s commitment to continual improvement, having created bespoke gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian dishes, as well as a completely vegan menu, ensuring that guests with dietary requirements can enjoy the great taste of Rasoi.

It also honours the restaurants’ ongoing charitable work – the restaurant not only regularly donates to a range of local charities in Swansea Bay but also funds medical and education projects in India.

On their success, Suki Kullar, owner of Rasoi, said:

“It’s a huge honour for Rasoi to be recognised as Hospitality Business of the Year at the Swansea Bay Business Awards, especially as we’re due to celebrate Waterfront’s 10-year anniversary this year.

“We’d like to say a huge thank you to our valued customers for their continued support, and we’d also like to extend our thanks to all the staff at Rasoi Waterfront for their hard work and commitment to amazing food and fantastic customer service. Without them accolades like this would not be possible.”

Kind-hearted restaurant owner works with charity to provide food to those in need

Rasoi, which has restaurants in SA1 and Pontlliw, teamed up with local charity, Faith in Families, which supports families and children in need throughout the city, to deliver its ‘12 Days of Christmas’ campaign.

Twelve local businesses, including Rasoi, donated a total of 1,800 items, including a mix of luxury items like selection boxes and Prosecco as well as basic essentials like washing up liquid as families are increasingly telling the charity that even the basics now feel like a luxury.

Rasoi’s festive tuk tuk collected the items every day over the last 12 days and delivered them to Cwtch Mawr, Faith in Families’ multibank in Llansamlet.

The businesses that participated in the campaign alongside Rasoi, and donated 150 items each, include JCP Solicitors, Facility Services Group (FSG), the Marina Chapter of the BNI, Miles Hire, Tonner Johns Ratti Solicitors, Swansea Building Society, Beth Thomas Mortgage Advisor, Azets, RJ Chartered Surveyors, Dawsons and Primark.

Suki Kullar, owner of Rasoi, said:

“We are thrilled to be able to support Faith in Families this Christmas with our 12 Days of Christmas campaign. We’ve worked closely with the charity for the past couple of years, and we wanted to do something extra special for them this year.

“The involvement from other local businesses was fantastic, and it was great to see just how many of them wanted to participate alongside us.

“The campaign has been so well received, and we hope that we’ve helped to spread some cheer this Christmas to many local families in our community who are really struggling to make ends meet. We also hope it’s helped to further raise awareness of the brilliant work that Faith in Families do each day within our city.”

Cherrie Bija, Chief Executive of Faith in Families, said:

“We are so grateful for Rasoi’s support through this wonderful campaign. Seeing the tuk tuk arrive at Cwtch Mawr every day filled with donations was so heartwarming. These hampers will make such a difference to the families that we support.

“We’d like to say a huge thank you to all of the businesses that participated in Rasoi’s campaign. Their support and willingness to donate has blown us away and means the world to us. Together, we’re spreading hope, joy and love this Christmas.”
