Silver Lining: New rail line revs up North Texas transit, tourism ahead of World Cup

Dallas Area Rapid Transit’s Silver Line — which starts running on Oct. 25 — will bolster regional transportation systems by connecting with TEXRail at two stations at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, officials said. DART will pay Trinity Metro about $6 million annually for that link.

I just watched a very interesting video on the #REM. It discusses some of the technical questions, but more importantly, it also addresses the organisational strategies used to get the project built quickly and (based upon a $9B estimated capital cost) cheaply on a per km basis.

This video has had the best explanation of the financing of the REM that I have come across.

#MaineTurnpikeAuthority drops controversial #GorhamConnector project

by WGME Staff Thu, March 6th 2025 at 7:56 PM

GORHAM (WGME) – "The Maine Turnpike Authority is now dropping its controversial Gorham connector project.

"The project would have built a new highway from South Portland to Gorham, with the goal of easing heavy road congestion.

"The MTA paused the project last year after receiving backlash from local residents.

"The project would have required the demolition of nearly a dozen homes and confiscation of #farmland."

"'There was a lot of concern, and people wondered if it's the right-sized tool for the job, a lot of people have concerns that, building another highway, there's concerns that it will just fill up,' MTA Director of Communications Erin Courtney said.

The MTA says it's heading back to the drawing board to re-examine traffic conditions and review past mobility studies to find better ways to ease congestion in the area." [Like #LightRail, #RapidTransitBusLines and more #BikeLanes!]

Wishing the New York City subway a happy 120th birthday. #transit #rapidtransit #subway #newyork #newyorkcity

@transbay on Instagram: "Wishing the New York City subway a happy 120th birthday. On this day in 1904, the first segment of the city's subway commenced operation. An extensive system of elevated rapid transit lines had been built in the preceding decades in New York and Brooklyn (the latter at that time was still an independent city); then, on October 27, 1904, the first underground four-track subway line opened for business.  The original line began at the beautiful City Hall loop station (now closed to public access other than occasional tours, although downtown 6 trains use the loop to turn back uptown), north via track in Fourth Avenue (now Park Avenue) now used by 4-5-6 trains to Grand Central, then crosstown on 42nd Street via track now used by the 42nd Street Shuttle, and finally heading north via track in Broadway now used by 1-2-3 trains to 145th Street. Within one month after opening day, the Lenox Avenue line now used by 2-3 trains had also opened as far north as 145th Street. In 1918, the Fourth Avenue track was extended north along Lexington Avenue to make a complete line on the East Side, and the Broadway track was extended south along Seventh Avenue to make a complete line on the West Side -- just two components in a flurry of system expansions that were built before World War II. These replaced the original 1904 line with the "H" shaped configuration familiar to modern riders. The "orphaned" track in 42nd Street was kept in operation as the 42nd Street Shuttle, as it has remained ever since. (The pictured image was extracted from a 1904 map of the original subway line.) Happy 120 years to the New York City subway! I wish I could be in town to celebrate the occasion. With any luck, we can make that happen for the 125th anniversary. #transit #rapidtransit #subway #newyork #newyorkcity"
