"I think what is crucial, however, is that if you do have a #rapecrisis service that is supporting all #survivors is that there’s dedicated #womenonlyspaces within that.”

Rape Crisis Scotland boss apologises for Edinburgh centre failings

Review had criticised support service, run by a trans woman, for not providing women-only spaces for 16 months

The Guardian

Inclusion advice to #bbc journalists from a #trans lady: using the term ‘women-only’ to mean ‘trans-exclusionary’ contributes to the idea that trans women are not women, and erases non-binary people entirely.

There is a legal provision for cis-female spaces, and there is a moral case for the existence of those spaces. Yes, #ERCC failed on this.

But the root cause is sexual violence, predominantly by cis men, and scarcity of funding for survivors.

Fund #RapeCrisis provision for ALL genders.

#Caution: People in #Ireland have always known about sexual/physical #abuse by all walks of society/church & didn't allow that they knew because rape is designed to traumatise and silence. As were laws in Ireland around #Censorship, so legal cases were stymied. Jury laws too. The early days of Dublin #RapeCrisis & WellWoman centres we met women/children/men. #Abuse is a sexual colonisation that wields power&compliance via a shame #omerta #CatholicChurch https://www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2022/11/19/jennifer-oconnell-clerical-child-abuse-required-the-silent-complicity-of-a-wilfully-ignorant-society/

When counselling women, children, men c.1980-1986 early days of #Ireland's #RapeCrisis services, Gards, schools, parents, doctors resisted claims.Men said they didn’t speak because they didn’t know a word for the abuse, or thatrape happened to men.Children had no voice. Decades of censorship law in court cases added to ignorance. Even publications/broadcast outlets refused to advertise help services. It seems the ingrained #shameomertà put upon the abused is still alive.

It is ‘dismaying’ that vulnerable adults remain so poorly protected in policy and legislation, says Irish Association of Social Workers
