Tonight: for some reason I rarely come to Smalls, but glad I made it tonight. Ralph Alessi with an excellent quartet, test-driving new material before heading into the studio Monday. Yvonne Rogers on piano, John Hebert on bass, and the ever-monstrous Ches Smith on drums and vibes. Complex songs played with plenty of soul and swing. Good stuff.
