The #RainbowFlag used by the #LGBTQIA+ liberation movement was first flown on #ThisDayInHistory at the #SanFranciscoGayFreedomDay in 1978. It was designed by gay artist #GilbertBaker, and the first two hand-dyed flags were hand-stitched by a team of 30 volunteers for the event.

Today in LGBTQ History June 25, 1978: The Rainbow LGBTQ flag was flown for the first time at the San Francisco Pride march. It was designed by gay activist Gilbert Baker in response to his friend Harvey Milk’s call for more openness and truth among LGBTQ people. The original design had 8 stripes, with each color representing something specific: Hot pink (for sex); red (life); orange (healing); yellow (sunlight); green (nature); turquoise (magic/art); indigo (serenity); and violet (spirit). Demand for the flag skyrocketed after the assassination of Harvey Milk, in November of 1978. There have been numerous variations of the flag designed, like the Progress Flag, which includes the colors of the Trans Pride flag, as well as black and brown, to represent queer people of color. Some Progress Flags include a black circle to represent Intersex people. After the homophobic 2016 Pulse Nightclub massacre, people in West Hollywood were seen flying a Gadsden version of the Pride flag inscribed with “#ShootBack.” In 2018, a Social Justice Pride Flag was introduced in Chennai, India incorporating elements representing the anti-caste movement and leftist ideology. In 1994, for the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall Riot, Baker created a one-mile-long rainbow flag, supposedly the largest flag ever created, which the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence displayed at the 2014 Shanghai Pride march.
