I have very mixed feelings about Star Wars.

Me: Astromech droids are both a demonstration of Star Wars power creep and also a demonstration of how everything in Star Wars is arbitrarily powerful according to the need of the plot. R2-D2 stretches the bounds of imagination and is ridiculous. When I have to take into account the existence of the prequels, the role the droids R2 and 3PO play detracts from my enjoyment of the entire setting.

Also me: So my droid mechanic character Jaya is a huge fan of this holoshow called Deeza And The Magic Scomp, Deeza is short for R2-DZa, Za being a fictional magic one-digit integer between 9 and 10, or depending on the season between 10 and 11, and magically everyone knows how to pronounce and write Za but don't know why since they don't remember being taught it, and R2-DZa's highlights are rainbow-colored where R2-D2's were blue, and the magic scomp link plugs into secret sockets to change the world around her, oh yeah Deeza is a girl droid, which basically just means she's like if Rainbow Bright was a droid, Jaya likes drawing Deeza on her tablets and uses rainbows in her advertisements for droid repair, Jaya's droid is an R1 astromech droid named R1-D3 who is called Dee for short and who playfully goes by the nickname Luggage but that's not her real name and nobody else is allowed to use it, R1 droids are lower-quality older models that are primarily used as astrogators on capital ships and they only have a roller base so they can't handle sharp inclines or stairs well, so she usually is gently but firmly strapped to a hover cart and goes everywhere Jaya goes and always comments in a deep bass whistle and bloops on everything and sometimes other droids find her annoying but she's always just kinda glad to be there and she has a great deal of pride in what she does and before Jaya got her she had been wiped so neither of them know much about what she was like before the wipe and Jaya will illegally mod droids to keep their memories when forced to do a wipe because ego death is murder and droids are slaves and the Republic should not be restored because then you'd just get the Empire again because the Empire is built on slave labor. deep breath
