Onboard the vintage R32 subway train during the excursion #nyc #subway #trains #railroadmuseum #fisheye #photography #darktable
From the backlog: November 8, 2025, I did the NY Transit Museum's nostalgia ride. Basically the museum runs a vintage train from its collection on a route relevant to the vintage train of interest. This time it was an R32 J train, and it ran on the J train's route to East New York. NYC subway trains do have conductors in addition to train operators, but they normally don't wear the conductor hat. #nyc #subway #railroadmuseum #trains #vintage #railfan #portrait #photography #darktable #fisheye
Next I bombed down the hill on super scary Route 28 back to downtown Kingston. I rode on a part of the Empire State Trail, and visited the Trolley Museum of NY. #upstatenewyork #railroadmuseum #trolley #trains #monochrome #blackandwhite #photography #darktable
Backlog from October 11, 2025. I took Amtrak to Rhinecliff, and biked 12 miles to Kingston. Because Amtrak doesn't operate on that side of the Hudson. This is the Catskill Mountain Railroad, a heritage railroad, a vestige of a once vast network. That train would travel at 5 mph for just a few mile. I intended to see the fall foliage, must be this day since it was the last "fall foliage" ride of the railroad, so I thought fall foliage would be past its prime the next week. I didn't want to miss it because I did miss it in a trip to Albany in October 2024. Turns out that I went a bit too early. Fall foliage wasn't quite there yet, but I could see some in the mountains. #upstatenewyork #railroadmuseum #trains #darktable
The Illinois Railway Museum took out their steam locomotives for Independence Day. The steam trains would do a short 10 mile trip, traveling very slowly, and this is the view from the train. It rained that day, and I sheltered from rain in the steam trains. #illinois #trains #railroadmuseum #steam #nature #darktable
Day 4 in Chicago, July 2024. I rode Metra from Ogilvie Transportation Center to Woodstock and then biked 10 miles to the Illinois Railway Museum, the largest railway museum in the US. Unfortunately, passenger trains no longer go there so I had to bike 10 miles from the nearest station. This is the Nebraska Zephyr of the CB&Q. #trains #railroadmuseum #blackandwhite #photography #darktable
At the SoCal Railway Museum, Perris, CA. I operated the locomotive on the left, because it used to go to Pasadena and stop at what's now Del Mar station. I miss Pasadena! The museum owns about a mile of track so I just made the loco go back and forth there, which got a little boring. #trains #railroadmuseum #inlandempire #socal #darktable
More from the backlog from June 2024: PBS SoCal has a show called Lost LA, which explores various aspects of LA history. There's an episode about the Pacific Electric. There I learnt about the SoCal Railway Museum in Perris, where the host of the show operated a Pacific Electric streetcar. So I visited the museum to operate the street car. I suppose that's very #fuckcars of me, since I drove a train before I drove a car. #inlandempire #railroadmuseum #train #trolley #streetcar #losangeles #darktable
Lomita railroad museum. By the time I got there, it was already closed, but because it's small and cute, I could see it pretty well from the outside. #trains #railroadmuseum #steamengine #darktable #losangelescounty
