1. This Bulgarian street cat caused me a lot of worries, because I let it lick my slightly wounded fingers without being vaccinated against rabies.
2. It was only after a fellow traveler told me about the possibility of rabies infection by touching stray animals that I understood the danger I put myself in.
3. Rabies is a viral infection that is 100 % deadly once clinical symptoms occur. Most often, dogs & cats, but also foxes, bats, and some other wild animals do transfer the virus to humans. Their behavior can be conspicious (extremely confiding or agressive), but it isn’t a reliable exclusion criterion. Animals that seem perfectly healthy can be infected and highly contagious too.
4. The virus is carried through salivary by bites or licking. There is no medication against the disease. But you can prevent an infection by getting yourself vaccinated against it beforehand. The vaccination should immediately be renewed if you were bitten by an infected animal. If you were exposed to salivary possibly containing rabies virus, the disease can be stopped by immediately (!) cleaning the wound & directly receiving vaccination treatment.
5. Get yourself vaccinated in your home country before going on bikepacking trips, especially through southeast Europe, Africa, and Asia! Start at least 2 months in advance with vaccination process. In some German hospitals you might get it spontaneously, but your health insurance might not refund the costs (3-4x 90€).
