Why are Pidcock and Laporte still chasing, when they're clearly losing time quickly? Because there's a good chance that the pace goes down or a while when the VanDerCar trio eventually catches the front group. And that could mean Pidock and Laporte may still be able to join.

Laporte is doing the sensible thing: I would be nice to get back to help van Aert, but let's have Pidcock do the majority of the work. You don't want to bring a fresh Pidcock back, but a tired one could be acceptable.
