Tonight I'm drinking the Black Tot Rum Rare Old Natural Cask Strength Demerara Rum, Aged 40 Years. I just cracked it. It is a fairly dark dram - holding it up to a light, it is opaque.

The nose makes me expect more molasses and sweet notes than I get on the palate.

The first thing that hits me is a bit of tannic astringency, but it quickly rounds out and the dark, demerara sweetness comes in on the finish. It is a dry sweetness, not at all syrupy or cloying.

It is warming and comforting, very easy to sip at 44.2% ABV. I'll have to side-by-side it with The Last Consignment.

I’ve seen some recipes for a “reflecting pool” cocktails floating around the internet for a few days. One, I’m sure was AI, as the ingredients could create the image presented. But then I saw a post with a recipe that actually sounds fun and plausible. So I thought I’d give it a go.
I used pineapple juice, and the first attempt came out too frothy, but once you start drinking it starts looking a bit weird… the fruit roll up appeared to hold together fine..
So, for round 2, I built it directly in the glass, so the rum was in direct contact with the “liner”. It’s a bit more blue than I’d like, and I added a bonus garnish. When I was at the store getting the fruit roll ups needed for this, I saw the dried seaweed snacks and thought that would be a fantastic addition to such a ridiculous cocktail. I think it really works 😂
Afterward I finished it, there was evidence the fruit roll up was dissolving, but unfortunately, it wasn’t coming off in pieces that would give the desired effect 😆

It hadn't arrived at the time, so it just shipped, and they offered free shipping on any other bottles added to the shipment, so I pulled the trigger on a few I'd been thinking about.

Compass Box Whisky Glasgow Blend Single Marrying Cask, 'Drammers Club #87'. This was married in an ex-Cameronbridge Lowland Single Grain Cask.

Tenmile Distillery Little Rest American Single Malt Whisky, Double Matured Cask Strength, Batch 002. Tenmile is doing some great things over in Wassaic, NY. And I'm always happy to support my friend Melissa.

FEW Spirits Immortal Rye - Rye Whiskey with Eight Immortals Oolong Tea. You may notice this bottle is opened, as we had a gathering on Saturday - and this shipment happened to arrive earlier that day.

I picked this up as my friend Marc is the distiller at our local Nashoba Valley Spirits, and creator of their own tea-infused bourbon and single malt whisky. So when I saw this I wanted to compare a tea-infused rye. I have to say, the tea influence is very faint here. It isn't a bad pour, but I don't think I'd guess there was tea if I didn't know. I prefer our local offerings.

And then yesterday another box showed up from the UK with a very special rum. Black Tot Rum Rare Old Natural Cask Strength Demerara Rum, Aged 40 Years. This is Demerara Rum distilled in Guyana in 1975, and was the heart of the blended rum served by the Royal Navy until 1970. It will be interesting to compare this with The Last Consignment.

Weiße Rumkugeln

Die Rumkugel-Variation ist als Gastgeschenk sicher gern gesehen oder einfach mit Freunden genießen.

200 g weiße Schokolade
2 EL Schlagsahne
80 g Butter
6 Zwiebäcke
8 EL weißer Rum
6 EL gehackte Mandeln
40 g Mandelblättchen

Schokolade zerkleinern, Sahne erwärmen und Schokolade und Butter darin schmelzen. Gut verrühren und abkühlen lassen.
Zwieback zerbröseln, mit Rum beträufeln und unter die Schokomasse rühren. Gehackte Mandeln zugeben und 1 Std. kalt stellen.
Aus der Masse walnußgroße Kugeln formen,
Mandelblättchen rösten und Rumkugeln darin wälzen und kalt stellen.
