Relaunch of the RSE Leaders Network SIG - Society of Research Software Engineering

Following a successful meeting at RSECon25, we’re very pleased to announce the relaunch of the RSE Leaders Network, now constituted as a Special Interest Group (SIG) within the Society.  The purpose and aim of this group is to provide a forum for existing RSE leaders to support each other, to provide a forum for aspiring leaders to gain experience and network, to coordinate the gathering and maintenance of resources supporting both groups, and to be a clear entry point to the leaders community. Although based in and primarily focused on the UK RSE community, the SIG welcomes leaders and aspiring leaders from around the world, as well as those leading wider research technical professional (RTP) teams. How to Join To join, you simply need to sign up for the mailing list. We also encourage you to join the #leaders Slack channel on the RSE Slack workspace, where leaders and aspiring leaders can discuss, share experiences and resources, network, and learn from each other.  We have archived the previous Slack channel and will shortly be archiving the old mailing list as well, so if you want to stay in the loop, you need to sign up for the new list. We run a private Slack channel specifically for current RSE group leaders. If you would like to join, please register your interest here. The SIG is led by a steering group, which is co-chaired by Fliss Guest and Marion Weinzierl and also includes Samantha Ahern, Jonathan Cooper and Michael Donnay. If you want to learn more about the group’s governance, you can read the Terms of Reference. What’s next Around 40 leaders and aspiring leaders met at RSECon25 to discuss how they wanted the SIG to work going forward. There was a vibrant discussion about how best to manage the communications channels left over from the previous iteration of the Leaders Network and suggested paths forward (which we hope are faithfully reflected in the new approach to the mailing list and Slack channels). The community agreed that there was value in hosting biannual meetings, where leaders and aspiring leaders could work together on common issues and share resources. We are hoping to run the next meeting in February or March, with the following meeting run alongside RSECon26 in September. If you are interested in hosting the next meeting, get in touch!

Mike's talk from #RSECon25, along with talks from Richard Howey and Jannettta Steyn (@jannettas) are up on the Society's YouTube channel.

The recording of my "Let's Talk About Mental Health" talk from #RSECon25 is now online. The audio quality isn't great, but this is the full, extended discussion of what I've been up to on my @SoftwareSaved fellowship.

September 2025 Newsletter - Society of Research Software Engineering

Welcome to Autumn and to our post-conference September Newsletter. Headlines Our main news includes updates on this year’s Conference and some big announcements about the future. RSECon25 RSECon25 took place at the University of Warwick earlier this month. We welcomed 434 people in person and 53 online for three days, of 60 talks, workshops and BoF sessions, 23 posters and our various social events. Thank you to the conference committee and all our volunteers for all your hard work. We couldn’t have done it without you! Thanks also to all our presenters, session chairs, reviewers and mentors. Recordings We tried to record/live-stream as much of the conference as we could. If you couldn’t make it, or missed a session because there was just so much good stuff going on, then keep an eye out for recordings, which will be posted on our YouTube page in the coming months. Awards We gave out five awards this year, including the very first Green RSE award, sponsored by the Software Sustainability Institute. Congratulations to our award winners Thank you to our Sponsors Finally, we would like to thank all our amazing sponsors for their support, which makes the conference possible. You can see the full list of Sponsors and read more about them on our website. RSECon26 + IRSC26 We are delighted to announce that RSECon26 will take place at the University of Sheffield on the 9th-11th September 2026. Your programme chairs will be Romain Thomas and Twim Karmakharm. This will also be the 10th in-person conference, so expect some special celebrations, swag and rewards! We are also delighted to announce that RSECon26 will be co-located with the first International Research Software Conference, hosted by our friends at ReSA. Trustee Elections 2025 At our AGM at RSECon25, we elected a new intake of trustees to help us run the Society. We would like to say a huge thank you to the trustees who stepped down for all their hard work, and we look forward to working with the new colleagues to help shape the future of your Society. You will be able to find out more about the board of trustees on our Governance page, once they’ve all been inducted and we have updated their profile information. Guix workshop

I came back from #RSECon25 with Covid. Not the nicest of swag to bring back home. But today my medicine arrived. And for those of you who are not originally from South Africa ... it is biltong. And, biltong fixes everything. So I should be up and about again soon.

This year we had a new award for Green RSE sponsored by the SSI and recognising individuals making substantial contribution to environmental sustainability.

The winner of the inaugral Green RSE award was

Andy Turner 🎉

Congratulations Andy 👏
