Er zeigt keinen Ausnahmezustand, sondern ein System, das über Polizei, Politik, Nachbarschaft und den Ku-Klux-Klan ineinander gegriffen hat. Lynchmord, Einschüchterung und soziale Kontrolle sind hier kein Ausbruch, sondern verwaltete Normalität. Dieser fast vierzig Jahre alte Thriller hat zu seiner Zeit viel Kritik einstecken müssen.
