If that laptop doesn't have an RJ-45 [1] socket on it, it's not a business/enterprise unit. [2] Full stop.

[1] Yes, technically 8P8C modular connector, but nobody calls it that.

[2] That makes it a consumer-grade machine, and should be treated as having an expiry date as long as its 1-year warranty. Every day after that is a gift.

Found some 1000BASE-T #SFP <-> #RJ45 modules which work with the #uboot #tftpboot of this #Xikestor #Realtek #rtl93xx switch chip. And managed to figure out how to select a port other than the first one for tftpboot (just use the same weird, non-linear port numbers as the #DTS in #OpenWrt uses.) This now simplified my test setup quite a bit.

Wait you can run 2.5GBase-T over CAT 5e cables?

And according to the wikipedia article HDBaseT can get 10.2 Gbit/s over Cat 5 cables.

What?!? I kinda thought you'd need CAT 7 cables for that.

There for sure have to be range implications, right? Like you don't get these speeds over 50 or 100 meters, right???

How far behind am I on the "latest happenings in networking"?

This may be the outside scoop, so I beg your pardon if so.

There's a newer style of crimp RJ-45 / 8P8C connector housing which is easier to use. Unlike the ones that have been around forever, you feed the wires all the way through the housing, so they stick out the front a little. Then the crimping tool cuts them off flush while crimping the contacts.

I haven't used them - I share your frustrations with making cables, particularly with stranded cable - but they are apparently much easier to get a reliable connection with.

Might be worth a try. They're commonly labelled "passthrough" connectors. I'm not recommending this particular seller or listing, it just has some good images:

So I bought #keystones for the first time and I can whole heartily say, never work with #RJ45 again without them.

These things truly are a blessing and it is much easier to attach these thin wires onto them by splicing than with those horribly crimp pliers.

You also have passthrough keystones for if you already have a crimped RJ45.

If you can tell what’s wrong here, I feel sorry for you. I also feel sorry for me, because I have at least two of these. 🫠😞😭

Replaced an ancient #RJ45 connector on the cable to my desktop pc.

How this even worked, I have no idea.
