I knew this would happen and this is one moment where I hate that I’m right.

Furthermore, The GAO really should perform a review of what benefits, rights and responsibilities for marriage will change under the #RespectForMarriageAct, now that it has become law. The last time the did such a review was In 2004, when #DOMA was still in force. #RFMA
The #RespectForMarriageAct is not enough for just codifying #WindsorVUnitedStates. If Congress couldn’t codify #ObergefellVHodges requirement for states to *perform* or *certify* same-sex marriages, they should have at least created a federal marriage certificate (and a federal marriage registry) to be issued to couples in the case that Obergefell is struck down by SCOTUS. #RFMA #lgbt #ssm #samesexmarriage #interracialmarriage
WinjayMy niece, who's trans, can marry anyone she wants now. The Federal government is guaranteeing that with The Respect For Marriage Act #RFMA. States might still fight it, but now there's nothing to stop her. Her grandparents couldn't have believed this would happen in their lifetimes. Their marriage was not possible in some states when they were young.
AshleeMy grandmother never saw her father again because of racist laws. She was deported to the U.S. with her mother while her father was forced to stay in Canada. The racist laws wanted to put them on a reserve, but they were mixed. Added to that were the U.S. laws on who was allowed to marry who; it drove them crazy not to know Metis people's blood quanta, so they could remove their marriage from the equation.
