My grandmother never saw her father again because of racist laws. She was deported to the U.S. with her mother while her father was forced to stay in Canada. The racist laws wanted to put them on a reserve, but they were mixed. Added to that were the U.S. laws on who was allowed to marry who; it drove them crazy not to know Metis people's blood quanta, so they could remove their marriage from the equation.
