Perhaps this presentation I did for Linux Conf AU in 2020 might illustrate the issues for the Commission.

In it I talk about Greek mythology, the Panopticon, politics and Cows!

RFC 1984: Or why you should start worrying about encryption backdoors and mass data collection

"The HLG seems to have run the exact same conversations that the law enforcement community has been rehashing internally since the 1990s. Only this time they attempted to introduce new concepts or reframe existing ones in an effort to cover their political agenda: giving police forces the most unrestricted access possible to (encrypted) data."

As usual they want to weaken encryption.

Thanks to @edri for their work.

High-Level Group “Going Dark” outcome: A mission failure - European Digital Rights (EDRi)

On 13 June, the Justice and Home Affairs Council, composed of EU Member States’ ministers of the Interior, will discuss the recommendations of the High-Level Group (HLG) on Access to Data for Effective Law Enforcement (“Going Dark”). This blogpost provides a short analysis of the HLG’s recommendations and a summary of its procedural flaws.

Hi Fediverse, long-term denizens and new arrivals.

I'm Esther and I post a bit about tech, privacy and how stories can help us to help others to understand the dangers to our #privacy by mass data collection.

I toot at times about #RFC1984,   this RFC is still pretty relevant to the now with attempts to undermine #E2E by legislatures..

Because of the work I do with @librecast , there's also mentions of multicast. you've been warned.

RFC 1984: IAB and IESG Statement on Cryptographic Technology and the Internet

The Internet Architecture Board (IAB) and the Internet Engineering Steering Group (IESG), the bodies which oversee architecture and standards for the Internet, are concerned by the need for increased protection of international commercial transactions on the Internet, and by the need to offer all Internet users an adequate degree of privacy. This memo provides information for the Internet community. This memo does not specify an Internet standard of any kind.

With Commissioner Johanssons recent statement I kinda feel the need to tap the sign again.

Also not here for her trying to insinuate that we are all unhinged, shadily funded sexists.

This law won't protect the children. What it will do is break encryption to directly surveill EU citizens.

It will mean your private messages will be available to the "bad guys".

So along with the dangers of Online Harms aiming to break encryption, police will deploy live facial recognition on the crowds to "detect terrorists" #RFC1984

Let's be clear this isn't about our safety, it's about the leviathan. The existing Inequal social structure with Charles at the top along with the other billionaires.

The vigilance should never stop. With #earnit, #onlineharms, #chatcontrol the legislatures seek to break encryption and read your DMs.

Back in August 1996 @ietf
thought incredibly carefully about cryptography and the internet.

https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1984

Even back then governments were trying to interfere with the internet with weak cryptography.  I love the RFC number.   Read each point. It's still very relevant all these years later.

Ashton Kutcher rassle dazzling the legislature while crying out "won't someone please think of the children" . 😒 Coming from the cofounder of thorn. This is an attack on encryption wrapped in a glamorous bundle. Say it with me kids, backdoors undermine encryption and puts everyone including kids in danger #RFC1984

Sex Workers Are at the Forefront of the Fight Against Mass Surveillance and Big Tech

The normalization of facial recognition technology and mass surveillance being used to target marginalized communities, whether in the hopes of “saving them” or not, is dangerous.
