Debian 13 RC2 fixes APT CD-ROM issues for USB installs
The second release candidate for the Debian 13 “Trixie” installer is now live, and it contains a lot of interesting changes surrounding different areas of the installer. This makes sure that your Debian install becomes smoother than before.
One of the most notable changes in this release candidate of the installer is that it addresses a bug where the Debian installer would not remove the APT CD-ROM source from the final installation if Debian was installed to your computer using a USB flash drive, which is becoming common these days. Modern laptops don’t usually come with the built-in CD-ROM reader.
Because of this, Debian users who have successfully installed this distro will be met with APT telling them to insert the Debian installation disk upon trying to install any package. They’ll be met with this message:
Media change: please insert the disc labeled 'Debian GNU/Linux 12.10.0 "Bookworm" - Official amd64 DVD with firmware 20250315-10:09'in the drive '/media/cdrom/' and press [Enter]This adds an extra step where you’ll have to comment the CD-ROM source manually by editing the /etc/apt/sources.list file. You’ll have to look for entries like this:
deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 12.10.0 "Bookworm" - Official amd64 DVD with firmware 20250315-10:09] bookworm contrib main non-free-firmwareThe change has been done in this commit in Debian’s GitLab instance, where bugs #1102140 and #1103650 have been fixed.
You can see other changes made to this release candidate of the Debian installer.
