Im enjoying more free time so decided to use some of it to totally upgrade my media/music workstation. Im building it round a Beelink i7. My price point is not massive, but not nothing. tl;dr no I didn't opt for Linux, but I may in the end put Linux on the old mac mini.

First I was going to update the late 2012 Mac Mini, but decided that was too much hassle and a fair amount of £££ but just wouldn't get the job done. Then I thought Id invest in a M4 Mac Mini with good CPU and SSD etc. Then I checked out Mini PCs: Beelink, GMKtec, Geekom. I also checked out what kind of freeware or low cost software was around and noticed a lot more for Windows than Mac. Bang for buck overall was definitely in Windows favour. So I got a Beelink EQi13, Focusrite 4i4 and an RC-1 for fun. Ive already got an old Yamaha CBX-K1 keyboard that's fine for now, plus Ive got mics and Rokit6's too. atm Im using Ableton 12 Lite and will probably get Intro because Im familiar in basic terms with Ableton, but I'll also install Reaper to have a good look, and maybe other DAWs to try out.

I had no problem booting with a local Win11 account. Focusrite sounds great, lots of clarity and just works but I need to get familiar with the input/output and the Ableton routing better, and how to use the input/output gains better so the Rokits get more volume and Ableton gets better levels if Im using live audio.

It's going to be a fun and creative way to develop my digital audio skills and write lots of jazztronica-textural ambient techno.
