Two Union Members Begin Hunger Strike to Protest Ill-Treatment in Prison: Turkey

Trade unionists Başaran Aksu and Doğukan Akan have begun a hunger strike to protest the ill-treatment they are suffering in detention and to express their solidarity with the Doruk miners’ resistance. According to a union statement, Aksu was deprived of drinking water for 48 hours upon his arrival in prison and faced serious hygiene problems, while Akan has been subjected to restrictions. Held in a T-type prison in Süleymanlı (Akhisar), the two men denounce the lack of response to their appeals and assert that their situation is part of a broader crackdown on labor activism.

Censorship and Tightening of Detention Conditions for Former RAF Guerrilla Daniela Klette

Supporters of alleged former member of the Red Army Faction (RAF), Daniela Klette, denounce a tightening of her detention conditions at Vechta women’s prison. Incarcerated since February 2024 after decades in hiding, she is being tried in several proceedings linked to robberies and different actions, including attacks attributed to the RAF against American and German institutions. According to her lawyers, she suffered prolonged isolation, constant surveillance, frequent searches and particularly strict transfer conditions, including the past use of a weighted vest, now contested by the courts. Furthermore, she is the target of censorship in detention, with irregular distribution of the press limiting her access to information. On the 61st day of the trial, April 8, 2026, Daniela Klette’s defense lawyers filed a motion to summon the director of the Vechta women’s prison, Dr. Katharina Tebben, so that she could be questioned as the person responsible for these measures taken against Daniela Klette.
