Finlay Donovan Crosses the Line by Elle Cosimano

We finally find out what Vero has been hiding in the earlier books. She had been a member of a sorority. She served as treasurer and the board held poker nights to raise money. When one of the participants loses his college tuition, his parents get involved and Vero is arrested. I won’t go into detail explaining how because I want you to read the book.

Finlay leaves her kids with Nick, her current boyfriend to help Vero out. Vero is several states away living with her mother and aunt under house arrest.

We are introduced to several interesting characters. I love the four senior citizens who come over to play cards with Vero since she is stuck at home with an ankle bracelet.

We are introduced to Vero’s mother and Ramon’s mother who are sisters who live in the same home. Ramon is her cousin. Javi is her boyfriend/husband. We also meet Javi’s mother.

This one is all about Vero, so we learn about her family and background. It answers a lot of questions that came up about Vero in the beginning of this series.

Vero is given a little liberty to get away from the house for errands and Wednesday night Mass every week. She takes advantage of it to help Finlay try to solve the mystery. Of course, she thinks she will get by cheating the system by not doing her errands or going to Mass as they investigate. They did use an interesting work around to help her avoid further charges.

Finlay and Vero get into more trouble as they interrogate suspects and investigate what happened when the money was stolen. Of course they do.

These books have a solid mystery, but they are told in a humorous way. The characters are mostly quirky, and some are annoying, but they do grow on you, in a good way. Finlay has had several boyfriends over this series since divorcing her husband in the first one. I must read the next to see if Nick is the one. I did like the little hint of something interesting coming with the next novel. You will have to read the book to find out what is going on with Finlay.

These books are humorous, but they are also for adults. There is a little sex sometimes and in this one I loved the neighborhood women trying to guess whitey tighties or jockey shorts for Nick. Finlay’s agent even gets into the game. Oh, I forgot to mention that besides getting into trouble, Finlay is a novelist.

If you are a fan of the Stephanie Plum – Janet Evanovich series, you might like this one.

I love this series and if you like a humorous mystery series and haven’t discovered this one yet, what are you waiting for? I would advise that you start from the beginning. They are quick reads and this is book number six so totally doable.

I picked this one up from my local library.

Two Bodies are Better Than One by Erica Ruth Neubauer

Set in the 1980’s, Lorraine Highsmith wakes up to find a body on her front lawn. Lorraine writes an advice column for the local newspaper. Lorraine is an older woman who has secrets.

She decides to investigate the victim’s murder. The local cop in charge, Michaela (Mike) Zenoni asks her to leave the investigating to the police. Of course, Lorraine doesn’t listen.

Lorraine is good at digging up dirt. She knows how to research a good story and takes it upon herself to write an article about this death.

Lorraine has a history with the mob and knows secrets about others in the community. She doesn’t plan to share any information with Mike, but she is more than willing to get as much information from Mike as possible.

Mike is dealing with people who assume that since she calls herself Mike, wears her hair short, and dresses like a man in her uniform that she is attracted to women. Nothing could be further from the truth and Lorraine knows.

To keep Mike occupied, Lorraine arranges for a date with a local hunk for Mike. She thinks she saw some sparks between the two.

There is much more going on in this small town than most of the citizens are aware of and Lorraine decides to dig up the dirt.

I want to tell you more but don’t want to spoil it. Trust me, you need to read this small-town mystery with bad people and dark humor. It was a “hoot”.

We have a local indie bookstore that has author events frequently. I try to go to all of them that interest me. This book was from one of those events.

I met this author recently along with a couple other female mystery authors. The three women were on book tour together. All their books sounded good, but I felt compelled to read this one first. I purchased one from each of the authors and two from this author. This book is the first in her new series. I had to get one from her other series too. So watch for her name again in the future.

What I am currently reading:

Caller Unknown by Gillian McAllister

Black Notice by Patricia Cornwall – I had planned to wait to go back to this series and read this book with Chris from The Book Cougars in December. I couldn’t wait. So, I picked up where I think I left off many years ago. I did love the Scarpetta books, and I think when they brought the adaptation to Prime it made me want to read them again. I am not going all the way back because there are so many, but I will start with Black Notice. I will tell you more about why this one intrigues me, when I review it.

Upcoming reviews:

The Dead Room by Catriona McPherson

Agony Hill by Sarah Stewart Taylor
