In meinem kurzen Post über Peter Thiel gestern habe ich den Punkt nicht erwähnt, der im Zusammenhang der Lektüre zur Klimakatastrophe – meinem Hauptthema – vielleicht der wichtigste ist: die Verbindung zwischen der autoritären Rechten und dem Kampf gegen die Klimabewegung. Meine Hypothese ist, dass sich die Rechte in den USA und Europa heute vom historischen Faschismus vor allem unterscheidet, weil sie wirksame Klimapolitik bekämpft. Anders formuliert: Die Klimakrise ist nicht eine von mehreren Krisen, auf die die Rechte antwortet, sondern sie ist der für ihr Handeln und ihren Erfolg entscheidende Faktor. Diese Hypothese ist intuitiv vielleicht einleuchtend, aber schwer zu belegen – vielleicht ist sie auch zu essentialistisch. Thiels Wut auf die Klimabewegung – bis hin zum Vergleich von Greta Thunberg mit dem Antichrist – verstehe ich als Argument für diese These. Dabei geht es Thiel nicht – wie anderen Förderern Trumps – primär um Erhaltung und Ausbau der fossilen Industrien, sondern darum, Klima- und Umweltpolitik als Kernstück auch anderer staatlicher Regulation zu unterbinden.
