April’s pretty Summer Snowflake plants are an aptly named metaphor for our area’s recent roller coaster weather. From flirting with ninety to frost warnings in the span of a week, it’s a wild ride.

Missing this lovely winter visitor who was at our feeders almost every day from December 26th through February 11th. Hope it has found a cozy, warmer spot to ride out the season.

Happy #NationalBirdDay!
This Black-necked Stilt, a mother-to-be enjoying some quiet foraging time while her mate took his turn on their nest, was my favorite lifer sighting last year.
This year’s first fave lifer sighting candidate - a Western Kingbird quite far away from its home - delighted us on just the second day of the year. A quick sighting from the back on a cold, cloud-covered day made for less than ideal pictures, but you can see a bit of its distinguishing lemon yellow belly if you zoom in.

From disappointment to delight: If our extended family Christmas gathering hadn’t been postponed by wintry weather, we wouldn’t have been home to see this pretty little late-to-migrate Orange-crowned Warbler at our backyard feeders the last two days.

Ah, the uplifting joy in the laughter punctuating cookie baking, tree decorating, and festive dinners, and the lyrical lilt of carols and the sweet voices in children’s pageants. But the moments of quiet joy are also precious: a hug or email or shared cup of coffee with a friend who is grieving, receiving a card or text from an old friend, or watching the snow fall or the sun rise over the icy horizon. The joy of the Christ Child meets us where we are, in the blue Christmases as well as those more merry and bright.

“In the bleak mid-winter / Frosty wind made moan, Earth stood hard as iron, Water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, Snow on snow, In the bleak mid-winter / Long ago.

A snowy #FootpathFriday #FridayFlashback in honor of our first flakes of the season. No more than an inch expected today, but the softly falling snow is lovely.
