Something else I was thinking about when reading this article: the #Quatsino nation could use the $18k saved by this to become an #ISP.
#Indigenous #DigitalSovereignty … I honestly cannot say I have **ever** heard of this, though I suspect some nation, some where, has done it. Yes, there are ongoing costs, risks. And there is a big up-front cost if they want to run fibre to the community.
But likely less than **not** doing it.

This article highlights one of the problems with #BCHydro: it does not serve communities, it serves corporations.
#Renewable #energy generation is slightly more $$ efficient when centralized. But #PowerGrid design is more #resilient when generation is #decentralized.
#Quatsino is an #entrepreneur model - 600 members, remote, nearly #OffGrid w/storage. A co-op #microgrid with the hamlet could be the ideal pilot program for #BC Hydro.

I found countless amounts of #rusted #iron pieces scattered all through the forest & there was lots on the beach below too. I thought it was bark at first but when I picked some up - found out it's iron & not from trees.
We were bummed to see this frozen #BlackTar pool, it was the largest one - amongst many smaller #TarPools & #tar puddles. You could smell the yucky #toxic scent before seeing them.

We decolonized a BC government sign before leaving the site. We saw many toxic black tar pools, all across this abandoned coal mine site.

#Suquash was the site of the first #CoalMine on #VancouverIsland. It still has lots of cool ruins & abandoned #mining #industrial machinery in the middle of the forest & on the beach below. It's very isolated & you'll likely see no one else around, if you go. It's just slightly north of #PortMcNeill town centre.
I often take friends here, when visiting North Island because the site has many different elements. The forest has a section where multiple trees were split down the middle by lightening strikes. New trees, plants & fungi are growing out of the burned out trees. The beach is full of prehistoric fossils of ancient marine animals. It is well worth a day visit. Follow flags to avoid getting lost there - it's easy to lose yourself in dense forest, if the site is unfamiliar to you. Carry a big stick & poke the ground before walking ahead - to avoid falling into hidden sinkholes.
The site still needs environmental clean up. There's still lots of black, greasy, toxic water that bubbles up from underground. The government only put up danger signs but they've otherwise abandoned this site.

Part of the #MarbleRiver in #Winter of 2022.
Taken on a trip towards Port Alice, after 5 days of blizzard conditions. Things cleared up & roads were safe enough to adventure out again. We hunkered down at a cheap motel in Port Hardy while the blizzard blew through. The only places we could buy foods/drinks were a gas station & pub - every other business that had food was shutdown.

For #WildlifeWednesday here's a photo of a harbour seal resting on an islet in Quatsino Sound. We were on a boat and kept a respectful distance because the seals were resting. We didn't want them to waste energy by jumping into the water.

For #TongueOutTuesday here's a sea otter relaxing near Quatsino Sound on Vancouver Island.
Once extirpated by the fur trade, sea otters were reintroduced on the west coast of Vancouver Island between 1969 and 1972 with the release of 89 sea otters from Alaska. They are listed as a species of special concern (2007). Their main predators are bald eagles, killer whales, sharks and humans.
