The #IndianNationalCongress declared independence for #BritishIndia on #ThisDayInHistory in 1930. It would take 17 years to achieve #PurnaSwaraj from Britain. #India later reused the same date for its constitution taking effect, so this day is observed as #RepublicDay there.

Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny: a reference to the Indian National Congress resolution at its Lahore session in 1930 that called for India's complete independence #PurnaSwaraj from Britain.

Not wholly: India was partitioned into two dominions

Or in full measure: India was becoming a dominion at the moment with the King of the United Kingdom still as head of state. Complete independence would come with the new constitution that declared India a republic.
