Set in an alternative history of England, it tells of the adventures of cousins Bonnie and Sylvia and their friend Simon the goose-boy as they thwart the evil schemes of their governess Miss Slighcarp, and their so-called "teacher" at boarding school, Mrs. Brisket. - Wikipedia

I enjoyed this Dickensian tale set in an alternate timeline and look forward to reading more in the lengthy series set in the same world. Whilst I loved many similar Puffin books as a child, this was one I read for the first time as an adult and a most enjoyable diversion from the grim news that surrounds us.
