I'm reading news of someone in academia complaining about the new no-AI policy by ArXiv that requires something as outlandish as co-authors to take responsibility for what gets published in a scientific paper and … I'm sorry, how is this unexpected?

Academic publishing has a lot of issues, but requiring people to actually read what they sign off to is not one of them.

Une belle description du fatalisme rampant présente autour de l'IA générative. Malheureusement plus le temps passe, plus la probabilité d'être contraint à utiliser ces outils est haute, que ce soit par obligation hiérarchique ou par pression de performance. La prophétie devient réalité si tout le monde en est persuadé...

Concernant cette dernière, il suffit de constater l'utilisation massive de l'IA dans la recherche, pour programmer (le code est un moyen), pour écrire ou même pour évaluer ses pairs.

Has this always been a thing?

I just got an email from a scientific journal publisher, informing me that an article of mine from 2024 was “among the most viewed articles” (in 2025, of the articles published in 2024).

And I mean, OK, I'll take it, but I'm sitting here wondering: is this something new, or has it been going around for a while and I just haven't heard of it? Are they really trying to get authors to publish with them with such “dopamine hit”?

I knew that sites like academia.edu and researchgate.net were trying to go the way of “social media for researchers” but this is the first time I see something like that from a more “serious” publisher.
