I mean some people might say who cares? Public domain means that people can still use the software.
This is true but if public domain was so great, why don't people release their software as public domain all the time instead of as open source?
This might seem like an abstract legal distinction but this AI induced move towards public domain needs discussion because I'm pretty sure most developers who open source their software did not sign up for this!
Cloudflare by vibe-cloning Next.js are laundering an open source piece of software and converting it into something with a different licence.
That is NOT in the spirit or intention of open source!
So my issue with Cloudflare is that they are literally displaying a "Copyright 2026 Cloudflare" on this public domain work and they are literally licencing it under the MIT licence which they are not entitled to do.
This is NOT open source. This is public domain!
