JoeThe difference living in Raleigh from living in Florida is obvious in almost every place we go. Here is the sign outside the two restroom doors in the Contemporary Art Museum.
The first semi-public restrooms in the US appeared in the late 1800s, in bars, to keep drinkers drinking.
For women, the first public gender-segregated "comfort stations" came in the early 1900s; but only for white women.
Those facilities acknowledged women's hard-won right to be out in public.
Now US cities have vanishingly few public restrooms. Does that signal that NO ONE has the right to be out and about in public?
