Democratic leaders have accused President Donald Trump of throwing a tantrum and chickening out after he canceled a meeting with them ahead of a potential federal government shutdown. The Republican president refuses to negotiate over Democratic demands to shore up health care funds as part of any deal. Congress must approve legislation to fund the government by Oct. 1. Trump on Tuesday rejected this week's sit-down, which the White House had agreed to a day before with Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, saying no meeting with them could be productive. Jeffries says, “Trump Always Chickens Out.” He called on House lawmakers to return to Washington next week. Schumer says Trump would “rather throw a tantrum than do his job.”

“The fact that 180 people signed onto the letter, with a supermajority of them still working in the building, & dozens of those people wanted to attach their real names signifies the severity of the problem,” Jeremy Edwards, a former press secretary for #FEMA who signed the letter, said in an interview. “They are that scared of us being so inadequately unprepared. It speaks a lot to the situation right now.”

At least 2 #FEMA staff members who had been part of the federal response to July’s #Texas #flooding #disaster have now been placed on leave, acc/to an agency employee & another person familiar wi/ the situation.

One employee who manages cases for all #disasters, including TX helped orchestrate the letter.… She has now been placed on leave & pulled off her disaster casework.

By Tuesday evening, the #FEMA office of the administrator had sent several people letters informing them that effectively immediately, they were on an administrative leave, operating “in a non-duty status while continuing to receive pay & benefits.”

Last month, the #Trump admin also put nearly 140 #EPA employees on leave after they sent their own letter of #dissent.
