Love, Peace & Poetry - Chilean Psychedelic Music
2008 Germany pressing

Really digging this one lately too.

A really good collection of very rare #psychedelic music from Chile from 1967-73.
Much like the Question Mark record I posted yesterday, a lot of these tunes were born out of a very tumultuous time of political turmoil in the country’s history.
The music’s effect was also quite similar. Young people plugging in, trying to stir up some very loud and fuzzy inspiration and hope for a brighter future.

This is an absolute must-have for any rabid fan of psych rock.

Polish Retro Rock’n’Roll Group Penthouse. Releases Second Album “Somewhere A New Moon”

Penthouse is a seven-piece lineup operating within alt-rock and retro aesthetics. The foundation of their sound is the juxtaposition of two female voices with a male lead, alongside a fusion of rock’n’roll, soul, and funk. The band’s work is rooted in 1960s style, presented in a dark, dense setting. The group was formed in Puławy, Poland by musicians previously associated with acclaimed polish underground alt rock bands such as The Black Tapes, Elvis Deluxe, The Feral Trees, and Jack Saint.

The second Penthouse album, “Somewhere A New Moon”, is described by the band as “searching for lightning in a bottle and the path to one’s own moon“. It explores a broad spectrum of genres: dark funk, brooklyn soul, and elements of afrobeat and blues.

CONSTANT SMILES was formed in 2009 by Ben Jones. He was joined by different collaborators in versions of the band that manifested as noisy soundscapes, scenic chamber pop, or icy coldwave-adjacent synth-pop, often released on opaquely-designed, ultra-limited albums named after favorite film directors. A move to New York and a few records on Sacred Bones resulted in more people becoming aware of the band, but Jones and friends remained in constant flux. The great unlocking of the Constant Smiles puzzlebox happened when the band solidified into a permanent core lineup when drummer/vocalist Nora Knight joined Jones and longtime bassist Spike Currier in the end of 2022. After years of being defined by visceral change and inconsistency, this stabilized personnel shifted the sound, emotional coloration, and impact of the band. With Knight and Currier providing counterpoint and structure to Jones’ always percolating creative drive, the songs became more streamlined and direct. Still airy and dream-like, the trio version of Constant Smiles that produced Moonflowers has cleared away the clouds of vaguity and uncertainty that could make earlier versions of the band feel harder to connect with. Like the best moments of foundational albums by Talk Talk or Nick Drake, the lived-in majesty of Adrianne Lenker’s Songs/Instrumentals or Jim O’Rourke’s excursions into chamber pop, Moonflowers reaches its dynamic swells naturally, almost subliminally. It’s a sound that past Constant Smiles releases hinted at but never fully achieved.

Much like the night-blooming flora the album takes its name from, Constant Smiles’ Felte debut Moonflowers is the product of slow, largely unseen patterns of growth. The New York-based band forged a path all their own on the way here, gradually growing from an amorphous collection of highly conceptual ideas into something easier to grasp, with every step of their unlikely route leading to Moonflowers, a subtle masterpiece of internally-born ambient pop.

Moonflowers is the clearest possible view of something that took years to form, yet feels naturally like an introduction. The music is cared for but not belabored, and this fits perfectly with songs about the feelings that happen before you have time to think. In this fully arrived form, Constant Smiles taps into something instinctive, an atmosphere of stillness with microscopic parts that never stop moving, and songs that are nearly transparent but still somehow heavier than a mountain.

LAS BRUMAS

Migrant music from the end of the world.

Founded in Santiago de Chile and based in Berlin, Las Brumas bring together elements from pop and rock, mixed with punk chords and Latin American folk. Originally created by singer and composer Yanara, the band acquires new power on stage as a fully fledged four-woman line-up. Following their first record Umbral, the band is in the process of creating their second album. In the meantime, new original songs - which include 2022 single Amor Craquelado - can be heard live in Berlin and other European cities.

Magic Castles Release New Single ‘Mary Anne’

Magic Castles release new single ‘Mary Anne’, the second to be lifted from their incoming album ‘Realized’. Due out April 24th on Fuzz Club, ‘Realized’ is a set of lush psych-rock reveries from Minneapolis songwriter Jason Edmonds, blending late-60s folk-rock warmth with shoegaze shimmer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTAQcT5M3NU

Consisting of nine dreamlike, melody-led trips that unfold in waves, ‘Realized’ is equal parts hazy nostalgia and widescreen modern psychedelia, centring dreamy, heavily-layered arrangements and floating vocal harmonies. Following recent lead single ‘Abandoned Mansions’, ‘Mary Anne’ is the latest taste of what’s to come. The band’s Jason Edmonds says of the track:

“This one was recorded at Pachyderm Studio (the legendary rural Minnesota studio where Nirvana recorded In Utero) with the Magic Castles band. It’s myself and Izaak on guitars, Kristof on bass and Adam drumming. It’s a catchy pop song with this dreamy push-and-pull energy. Tight and rocking, melodic and upbeat, but with a streak of melancholy running through it. Not quite shoegaze… but it lives in that atmosphere, with some call and response type backing vocals for fans of Television thrown in. The Mary Anne in question is someone maybe struggling with communication breakdowns and the weight of the world, but she’s strong, resourceful, and ultimately ready to kick ass.”

Magic Castles was formed in Minneapolis MN in the early 2000s by multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Jason Edmonds. Their debut album ‘Lore of Mysticore’ caught the ear of Anton Newcombe of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, culminating in four albums released on Newcombe’s label ‘A’ Recordings Ltd over 2012-22 – including, most recently, 2021’s ‘Sun Reign’ (a song from which would feature on an episode of the hit HBO series Succession). After a headline tour of Europe in 2023, Jason returned to Minneapolis and steadily finished piecing together ‘Realized’ – the band’s fifth-full length, now ready to see the light of the day on their new label home Fuzz Club.

Edmonds and the rest of the current Magic Castles line-up (consisting of Adam Patterson on drums, Izaak Drew on guitar and Kristof Marden on bass) recorded the tracks with Nick Tveitbakk at the legendary Pachyderm Studios in Minnesota, with additional recording by Edmonds at his studio the Map Room and in Neil Weir’s remote chapel-converted-to-studio, Blue Bell Knoll, where Edmonds and Weir would loving co-mix the end result. The result takes Magic Castles’ music to a newfound level of clarity, whilst still retaining that same, long-harboured analogue warmth only made possible through an array of vintage amps, guitars and transistor organs.
