Bacteria of the phyla Firmicutes and Proteobacteria, including those of the genus Streptococcus, are the most common microorganisms found in the saliva of swine, which contains a different microbiota from swine feces and the environment in which the animals live.

Interesting functional #microbiome study published in Cell Host & Microbes recently on how psychoactive drugs interact with the gut microbiome and addiction.

Authors found that after exposing mice to cocaine ▶️ increase in norepinephrine ▶️ increase in #Proteobacteria colonization ▶️ depletion of glycine in gut/CSF/blood ▶️ facilitation of cocaine-induced addiction-like behaviors.
