Was on a #makevotesmatter call a couple of days ago when someone I admire said he only switched to supporting #ProportionalRepresenttion when he realised you didn't have to use #multiMemberConstituencies. He disliked this because of less local representation. As an #STV fan, this triggered some soul searching.
I've come to the conclusion that the constituency link requirement is bogus. Effectively, it is telling voters before they even vote that their most important issue is local representation. Clearly, that is an important consideration but I bet given the choice most voters would rather be represented by a like minded person than someone who lives near by. For instance, I've frequently considered writing to my MP. Only done it once because 99% of the time he has clearly demonstrated that he opposes what I want, so he ain't going to advocate for me...

We need something that's not just the same lies in a different coloured tie. We need more voices in politics. We need politicians who represent us, not just the people cutting the two main parties enormous cheques.

Petition: Use Proportional Representation at the next General Election

Change the voting system to Proportional Representation instead of First Past the Post. We think this would eradicate disillusionment and encourage voter participation as people could start to believe that their votes actually matter.

Just noticing US people online recommending #ProportionalRepresenttion voting systems as a remedy against #gerrymandering. They do make it harder, but attempts are still made, as Ireland's "Tullymandering" election showed (also showed that gerrymandering under PR, as in FPTP, can also have the opposite of the intended effect if it's a wave election). So maybe, as Ireland now has, a PR system with an independent constituency boundary commission is a more solid solution.

Make Canada's voting system fair and proportional!

Canadians are tired of our broken voting system. After Trudeau broke his promise of reforming our electoral system in 2015, apathy and cynicism towards our democracy has grown. If Canada is to weather the challenges that come our way, we must strengthen our democracy by making our voting systems more fair through proportional representation. As our new Prime Minister, Mark Carney has an opportunity to deliver on this broken promise!  Proportional representation would ensure majority...

Campaigners for electoral reform say outcome has renewed pressure for proportional representation

The Guardian

@proseandpassion Because the UK system has never been proportional. It doesn't matter how many votes you get in total, or there would be more LibDems and Green MPs, what matters is how they are distributed.

Corbyn attracted extra votes in seats where he didn't need them but lost them in seats where they were critical.

This election was very similar overall to the ones before, but the distribution was the difference.

Without #ProportionalRepresenttion of some sort, it's all very silly.

Biggest-ever gap between number of votes and MPs hits Reform and Greens

The gap between the share of total votes won by the winning party in the 2024 general election and the share of Parliamentary seats won is the largest on record, BBC Verify has found.

This disparity has prompted renewed calls for reform of the electoral system, with Richard Tice of Reform UK complaining on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Friday of the “injustice” that his party had received millions of votes but only five seats in Parliament.

The Green Party’s co-leader Adrian Ramsay said he wanted to see a “fairer system” to ensure that “every vote counts equally”.

The Electoral Reform Society claimed it was “the most disproportional in British electoral history”.
