Elections should grant everyone a vote that matters, but ours deprive most of us of a representative of our choosing.

With 5 parties polling strongly, our voting system is delivering chaos and turning elections into a lottery - where few people get what they want. It simply can't cope with the multi-party politics we have in the UK.

Fun Fact: The dozens of candidates who ran in Toronto-St Pauls as a protest calling for Trudeau to implement the electoral reform he promised a decade ago won 1,100 votes. The Liberals lost by only 600.

It's a good day for BC Politics because there are 4 political parties with official party status in the Legislature. Speaking very generally, there are two "right” and two “left" wing parties. It's time to cement this reality, and strengthen our democracy, by instituting Proportional Representation.

It should not be the machinations of internal party relationships that creates new parties for the people to vote for. It should be the people themselves.

The only reason the newly re-energized BC Conservative Party, can be an “Official Party” — gaining it resources to do the work in the Legislature — is because of when the old BC Liberal party nearly swept the Legislature in 2001, winning 77 of 79 seats. Those last 2 seats were held by the NDP and were two short of the 4 seats needed for official party status.

Out of a gesture of pure pity, the rules were changed to allow for 2 seats to be enough to be an official party in the Legislature and thus perform the important function of Official Opposition to the best of those two Members abilities. (Both women inc. one of Asian heritage btw!)

The popular vote in that election was 58% - 22% - 12% (BCL, NDP, Green). It resulted in BC's journey toward PR which was eventually thwarted by entrenched political players terrified of losing power.

The Greens and Conservative parties need to push for PR from the ruling NDP. And if the NDP are smart, they will realize they have a moment to secure a system that would have them stay in power for quite awhile.
