This is the US version of Tina Turner's comeback album, 'Private Dancer', complete with different front cover artwork (the inner sleeve actually features the better-known international cover instead). So, what else can be said that has not already been said?
Interestingly, it only dawned on me many years ago just how much of the material on here actually originated elsewhere. Some were already obvious to me, such as "Let's Stay Together" and "Help!", but I had no idea for years that "1984" was the same song originally recorded by David Bowie on his 'Diamond Dogs' album. Others are a bit more complicated. "What's Love Got To Do With It" and "Better Be Good To Me" had both been recorded earlier by Bucks Fizz, although Tina's versions were released first and ultimately became the definitive recordings. "Steel Claw" originally came from Paul Brady, whilst "I Can't Stand The Rain" was first recorded by Ann Peebles. What makes 'Private Dancer' so impressive is how thoroughly Tina made all of this material her own. With the help of several producers, she transformed songs that could easily have sounded disconnected into a remarkably cohesive album. Considering the record was assembled from different sessions after Capitol Records took a gamble on her comeback, it is impressive how naturally everything fits together. Sure, it absolutely sounds like a record from its era, but in my opinion it still sounds fantastic today. Great album!
