Principia for Sale

With Christmas approaching, you may be looking for gift ideas so I thought I would pass on this advertisement:

The book concerned is a First Edition of the Continental Issue of Isaac Newton’s Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica, dated 1687.

For more details see here. The estimate is “only” €100,000, which seems to me a bit on the low side. A similar volume was listed by Christie’s in 2016 as $1,000,000 to $1,500,000 but in the end sold for $3.7 million. This one has had some repairs and is slightly browned with age, but has an interesting provenance. I’d be surprised if it didn’t fetch at least a million. We’ll find out in a week!

De resten van de #principia bij het voormalige Vliegkamp #Valkenburg blijken te zijn gevonden bij de aanleg van een nieuwe busbaan van Leiden naar Katwijk. De kop van de NOS klopt niet. Het gaat om het hoofdgebouw van het al in 2020/2021 ontdekte legioenskamp.

@famulimas Ligatures often cause more problems than they solve. As a single shape, the letters will resist tracking and increasingly stand out. There are ways of drawing that allow unruly terminals to be managed and still facilitate tracking. A contextual alternative for the f, with a reduced terminal, tracks like any other glyph and removes dozens of ligatures. Fewer axes and objects to manage, smaller font. Archeologen hebben bij onderzoek van het in 2020 en 2021 in #Valkenburg ontdekte Romeinse #legioenskamp sporen van het hoofdgebouw van het fort gevonden. Het gaat om paalsporen van dit ‘#principia’.

Bij archeologisch onderzoek in Valkenburg zijn resten van een Romeins hoofdkwartier gevonden. Het gaat om paalsporen die wijzen op de principia, het centrale gebouw van een Romeins fort.

Moin #Karlsruhe, wie schön bitte sind eure Fahrräder!

Eigentlich wollte ich gerade zurück ins Hotel, endlich mal bei Sonne die Pfinz entlang, früh ins Bett, Deutschland-Spanien vom Bett gucken und dann Schlaf nachholen. Aber dann war da auf dem Weg dieser wunderschöne Sommerabend, vom Schlachthof neben dem Radweg kam gute Musik und dann stand da dieses wunderbare Principia mit ganz besonderer Klingelkonstruktion.

Die Fahrerin ging auf Reha und brauchte ein Fahrrad. Ein Gebrauchtes sollte es sein, aber auch wenn der Händler gute Angebote hatte, war nichts wirklich passendes dabei. Bis er in den Keller ging und eben diese Principia aus dem Privatbesitz im Keller holte. Es wurde Liebe und die beiden fuhren zusammen.

The #Principia Wiki has a page about #Apparatus which has since become one of the most visited pages coming from Google search results.

Even now with Principia being revived as open source and such, it still seems to be overshadowed by the popularity Apparatus had back in the day. Which is unfortunate, but hey, I have lots of nostalgia for it too.

So I decided to set up a new website for collecting information about the game, intended to look very similar to the old community site for the game:
