Looking Up for Wood Ducks
A spring morning search for Wood Ducks in Princeton’s Institute Woods turns into a lesson about looking up—and knowing your lens limits.
25 May 2021 — Autumn Hill Preserve
I looked at my calendar this morning and felt a pang of anxiety and dread. There is little to no room for thoughtful introspection and critical thinking. It's all go-go-go. I could barely schedule a lunch break, and there's no time in the schedule for an afternoon stretch and mental health break. Our team was assigned more projects to assess this week, and I was given two more, bringing my total to thirteen. During our one on one, the manager commented that I was perhaps at […]https://islandinthenet.com/25-may-2021-autumn-hill-preserve/
Kingston Grist Mill at Kingston Mill Historic District
21 December 2024 The world outside my window was a serene winter wonderland. A light snowstorm the previous day had blanketed the area transforming the landscape into a postcard-perfect scene. The crisp, clear air and deep blue sky were an irresistible call to explore, camera in hand. My destination was the Kingston Grist Mill, located in the heart of the Kingston Mill Historic District, a place steeped in both history and natural beauty. The crisp, clear air and deep blue sky set the […]https://islandinthenet.com/kingston-mill-historic-district-kingston-grist-mill/
Carolina Chickadee (Poecile carolinensis)
I was standing at the blind just off the main trail at Charles H. Rogers Wildlife Refuge. The vocalisations of the Carolina Chickadee (Poecile carolinensis) are varied and include a distinctive "chick-a-dee-dee-dee" call, which serves as a contact call, and a sweet, whistled "fee-bee-fee-bay" song, which is more common in the spring. I heard the…

Wood Thrush (Hylocichla mustelina)
It was another overcast and foggy morning but I awoke early and rushed over to Institute Woods hoping that I would find warblers. I walked around for several minutes listening to birds sing from the trees. I started to think that perhaps I was hallucinating the bird song but Merlin ID confirmed what I could not see. The birds were present but I didn’t see them.

Female Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis)
I don’t see Female Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) quite as often as I see the flamboyant red-coloured males.

White-throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis) at Institute Woods
White-throated Sparrows (Zonotrichia albicollis) are a common sight at bird feeders but I’ve only seen them in the wild a few times. These small, chunky sparrows have distinctive black and white stripes on their heads, a white throat, and a splash of yellow between their eyes and beaks. Their plumage includes warm brown tones on their wings and back, contrasting with a clean grey underbelly.
