The Prickly Pear Cactus started blooming yesterday. Cooler and a lot nicer out today. Got off my duff and cleaned up around the plant. Didn't get it done last year... Pulled out, cut off weeds and grass trying to take over its spot. Fished out a bunch of old leaves and dead material with barbecue tongs.

Only had to remove maybe a dozen little needles from my fingers. I bring the tweezers out along with the gardening tools. They're ALWAYS needed😆

Purple Opuntia (purple prickly pear cactus). I have one in my back yard and one in the front yard. These guys don't produce edible fruit like a standard green one does. I do have one of those in my front yard. The more stress these are under (harsh temps, lack of water, etc), the more purple they get. I planted both of mine last year and it just snapped off a pad from another plant, stuck it in the ground and watered them maybe twice and they are both thriving. Cant wait until they flower and pollinators will be all over them. #pricklypearcactus #santaritaopuntia #cactus #desertplants #southernaz
