L’amant véritable

C’était un homme droit, un amant véritable. Un jour, après avoir médité une pleine année dans une grotte du désert, il s’en alla frapper à la porte de sa bien-aimée. Derrière la porte close il entendit sa voix. Elle demanda :

– Qui est là?

– C’est moi, dit l’homme, sur le seuil.

Il n’y a pas de place pour toi et moi dans la même maison, répondit la voix de sa bien-aimée, derrière la porte close. Alors cet homme droit, cet amant véritable s’en retourna au désert où une pleine année encore il médita. Quand enfin il revint frapper à la même porte, à nouveau il entendit la voix de sa bien-aimée. À nouveau elle demanda :

– Qui est là?

Cette fois l’homme droit répondit :

– C’est toi-même.

Et la porte s’ouvrit.
