4/5: Ohhhh nice! I generally don’t like 1st person POV books but here it worked! Nick is bewildered, awed, exasperated, and infuriated by Johnny’s everything and her brilliance is shining through the rambling and logical leaps Nick witnesses. I enjoyed the sense of creeping horror and the speculative AU world, the spine-tingling unease as Johnny and Nick run out of time and then out of…something else. There are some compelling twists and turns and an interesting resolution that makes me wonder what will happen in the next book.

J'ai fini aujourd'hui cette belle novella de Premee Mohamed.

Faut-il être mort.e (et n'avoir rien à perdre) pour combattre l'injustice et la domination patriarcale ?

Je n'aurais pas été contre un format plus long que la novella.
La nouvelle permet de rester percutante mais tant le sujet que l'univers aurait mérités d'être approfondis il me semble.

J’aime beaucoup les novellas de Premee Mohamed. Ici, elle nous propose une novella entre cyberpunk et fantastique.Tout commence par un événement impossible : une morte qui se réveille à son enterrement !
Premee Mohamed propose une histoire de rébellion différente de ce que l’on a l’habitude de lire, en se plaçant du point de vue de celles qui n’osent pas enfreindre les règles ni risquer leur quotidien pour un meilleur aléatoire.

Quel plaisir de retrouver Premee Mohamed! Après avoir plongé dans son univers post-apo de La migration annuelle des nuages et sa fable très dark de Comme l’exigeait la forêt, l’autrice nous emmène ici dans un univers cyberpunk questionnant les mécanismes de la domination, la liberté et la vengeance. Et que désirez-vous ce soir a été publié tout récemment aux éditions L’atalante et j’ai beaucoup aimé!

Here's my summaries & opinions of the Hugo finalists for Best Novella (short 100-150 page novels)!

THE BUTCHER OF THE FOREST, by Premee Mohamed, is a dark fantasy. There are two forests in the land: the south forest is an ordinary forest where you can go in and out, hunt, cut trees, or whatever. But the north forest is haunted: people, especially children, who stray in are never seen again, probably taken by the other people of the wood.

Veris is the only living person who went into the forest and came out with a lost child. Early one morning she is summoned to the palace of the Tyrant, and told that the Tyrant's two children have wandered into the north forest. Veris will have to go in and retrieve the children; if she fails, her family and entire village will be eradicated.

This is a dread-filled version of the trope about exploring a shadowy and mysterious forest. The danger is constant, with the usual rules of faerie (don't tell anyone your name; don't eat anything), but there's the additional ticking clock of the Tyrant's threat and Veris's harrowing memories of her previous trip. It's a page-turner that I had to finish the same evening I began reading it.
