After 60+ years, the common diabetes drug metformin has been found to unexpectedly affect the brain.
A new study shows it targets the protein Rap1 in the ventromedial hypothalamus, activating SF1 neurons to help lower blood glucose — and it works at much lower concentrations in the brain than in the body.
Promising findings that could lead to better treatments for glucose control and possibly brain protection.

Howard G. Smith MD, AM on Instagram: "Avoiding Excess Sugar Cuts Heart Attack Risk Reducing your blood sugar readings and your A1C level down to a normal range can cut your risk of serious heart problems by more than half if you have already been classified as a pre-diabetic. This is the conclusion of a multi-national collaborative study just published in the journal The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology. Researchers found that those who reversed their prediabetic states had a 58% lower risk of dying from heart disease or being hospitalized for heart failure. Rates of heart attack and stroke were also cut by more than 40%. The study also demonstrates that exercise, weight loss, and healthy eating, while helpful, do not statistically improve risks of heart attacks or early death for prediabetics unless their blood sugar levels return to normal More than one billion people worldwide and over one-third of U.S. adults have prediabetes. This study suggests that vigorous efforts to reduce your blood sugar as well as lowering blood pressure, reducing cholesterol, and quitting smoking are all part of a successful effort to keep your heart healthy and pumping. https://medicalxpress.com/news/2025-12-blood-sugar-halve-heart-international.html https://www.thelancet.com/journals/landia/article/PIIS2213-8587(25)00295-5/fulltext #prediabetes #sugar #aic #heartattack #death"
