Fucking hell.
Ive been buying books from #PragmaticProgrammer for years. I've run book clubs with those books. I've been listening to Dave Thomas for much of my career. I took a class on Elixir from him once and bought his online elixir course. I consider him one of my heroes. He is one of the very, very few people who's newsletter I subscribe to and actually read.
Now that newsletter is extolling the virtues of LLMs for coding.
I am heartbroken. I feel lost and sad and profoundly disappointed. How can someone I've looked up to for so long be ok ignoring the major ethical and moral issues with LLMs? How can he be ok with boiling away our water, ruining people's lives by building enormous data centers right next to their homes, skipping copyright law and allowing a very select few to commoditize our very thoughts and personalities--sometimes even our appearance and voice--in the eternal search for more wealth consolidation?
I'm annoyed that I will need to find a new book publisher from what I can only assume is a rapidly diminishing pool of non-slop-supporting potentials; but I am devastated that I need to find a new role-model.
Fuck you, LLM dystopia.
