I agree it's good to call it “terrible odds”, @brainwane, & I believe governments shouldn't run casinos. (Cf: John Oliver's discussion of this:

)

The only reason the odds are bad when the jackpot is so high is b/c the lotteries allow more than one person to buy the same numbers. The chance of a split of the jackpot makes it a bad bet when the cash payout value exceeds the odds.

My rough calculations are a $2 #Powerball ticket tonight has an expected value of ≈ $1.40.

@ryan you said it was bad timing @evan did his “have you gambled” #EvanPoll, but I kinda assumed it was the #Powerball near-record total tonight led Evan to do the poll!

Like any “gambling without the best of it” (I.e. buying a $2 ticket that has only ≈$1.40 in expected value), the “unquantifiable” value get is imagining the joy of winning. You definitely made a bad bet if it stresses you out! 😬

I plan to form a 501(c)(3)-PF & employ myself to be a NGO grant maker if my 1-to-56mil gets there.
