The Sign is a Lie.

In Václav Havel’s famous essay, the Greengrocer puts a slogan in his window. Not because he believes it, but to signal to the world: "I am afraid and therefore unquestioningly obedient."

It’s a performance. A mask. A survival tactic.

We see "Greengrocer’s Signs" everywhere today—in corporate buzzwords, in social media performativity, and in the things we say just to "fit in."
