How Britain became a food bank nation

In the first instalment of a special series on the emblems of Tory Britain, the former prime minister Gordon Brown looks at the avoidable epidemic of hunger – which is getting worse

The Guardian
If you organise a country so that feeding the poor is done by charities and a large % of the population rely on charities for the necessary basics for life what do you do when giving fatigue sets in? This is one reason why the safety net is a governmental responsibility.

🚨 1.5 MILLION emergency food parcels were provided by food banks in our network between April and September. This is the highest number of parcels our network has ever distributed in 6 months. And this is likely to get worse – unless the government steps up to make change. ⤵️

These people are employed to serve us and yet have no idea what it's like in the real world. They are so out of touch, it's not even funny. #ToriesRToast #povertyuk #news #conservativecrisis

It is unacceptable that the use of prepayment metere has not been outlawed in the UK. It is also unacceptable that the poor and less well off are expected to pay the highest energy rates. Access to energy to keep warm in cold weather is a human right not a lifestyle choice ffs @UKLabour #elitism #povertyuk

Major problems in private housing in the UK. It’s simply not affordable to most.
Radical thought here, but how about we stop seeing housing as a profit-making venture? ‘Landlord’ shouldn’t be a career option. I will probably get shot down by the private landlords here for this but a home should be a fundamental human right, not a privilege. Who decided that a persons shelter/ safe space should be monetised for profit anyway? #Housing #Housing4all #Fairness #RadicalInclusion #Landlords #PovertyUK
