Your Brain Doesn’t Just Turn Off When You Die

What happens when we die? It’s one of the single greatest questions in the history of humankind, silently driving science and religion for centuries. The standard reductionist model says consciousness simply ceases after death. Lights out. Thank you, next. However, this fails to explain phenomena like near-death experiences (NDEs), where people experience something profound often bright lights, tunnels, or hearing voices of deceased relatives when they’re close to death……Continue reading….

The Society for Psychical Research was founded in 1882 with the express intention of investigating phenomena relating to Spiritualism and the afterlife. Its members continue to conduct scientific research on the paranormal to this day. Some of the earliest attempts to apply scientific methods to the study of phenomena relating to an afterlife were conducted by this organization. Its earliest members included noted scientists like William Crookes, and philosophers such as Henry Sidgwick and William James.

Parapsychological investigation of the afterlife includes the study of haunting, apparitions of the deceased, instrumental trans-communication, electronic voice phenomena, and mediumship. A study conducted in 1901 by physician Duncan MacDougall sought to measure the weight lost by a human when the soul “departed the body” upon death. MacDougall weighed dying patients in an attempt to prove that the soul was material, tangible and thus measurable.

Although MacDougall’s results varied considerably from “21 grams”, for some people this figure has become synonymous with the measure of a soul’s mass. The title of the 2003 movie 21 Grams is a reference to MacDougall’s findings. His results have never been reproduced, and are generally regarded either as meaningless or considered to have had little if any scientific merit. Frank Tipler has argued that physics can explain immortality, although such arguments are not falsifiable and, in Karl Popper’s views, they do not qualify as science.

After 25 years of parapsychological research Susan Blackmore came to the conclusion that, according to her experiences, there is not enough empirical evidence for many of these cases. Mediums purportedly act as a vessel for communications from spirits in other realms. Mediumship is not specific to one culture or religion; it can be identified in several belief systems, most notably Spiritualism.

While the practice gained popularity in Europe and North America in the 19th century, evidence of mediumship dates back thousands of years in Asia. Mediums who claim to have contact with deceased people include Tyler Henry and Pascal Voggenhuber. Past life regression is a method that uses hypnosis to recover what practitioners believe are memories of past lives or incarnations.

The technique used during past-life regression involves the subject answering a series of questions while hypnotized to reveal identity and events of alleged past lives, a method similar to that used in recovered memory therapy and one that, similarly, often misrepresents memory as a faithful recording of previous events rather than a constructed set of recollections.

However, medical experts and practitioners do not agree that the past life memories gained from past life regressions are truly from past lives; experts generally regard claims of recovered memories of past lives as fantasies or delusions or a type of confabulation, because the use of hypnosis and suggestive questions can tend to leave the subject particularly likely to hold distorted or false memories.

There is a view based on the philosophical question of personal identity, termed open individualism by Daniel Kolak, that concludes that individual conscious experience is illusory, and because consciousness continues after death in all conscious beings, you do not die. This position has allegedly been supported by physicists such as Erwin Schrödinger and Freeman Dyson.

Certain problems arise with the idea of a particular person continuing after death. Peter van Inwagen, in his argument regarding resurrection, notes that the materialist must have some sort of physical continuity. John Hick also raises questions regarding personal identity in his book, Death and Eternal Life, using an example of a person ceasing to exist in one place while an exact replica appears in another.

If the replica had all the same experiences, traits, and physical appearances of the first person, we would all attribute the same identity to the second, according to Hick. In 2008, a large-scale study conducted by the University of Southampton involving 2,060 patients from 15 hospitals in the United Kingdom, United States and Austria was launched. The AWARE (AWAreness during REsuscitation) study examined the broad range of mental experiences in relation to death.

In a large study, researchers also tested the validity of conscious experiences for the first time using objective markers, to determine whether claims of awareness compatible with out-of-body experiences correspond with real or hallucinatory events. The results revealed that 40% of those who survived a cardiac arrest were aware during the time that they were clinically dead and before their hearts were restarted.

One patient also had a verified out-of-body experience (over 80% of patients did not survive their cardiac arrest or were too sick to be interviewed), but his cardiac arrest occurred in a room without markers. Dr. Parnia in the interview stated, “The evidence thus far suggests that in the first few minutes after death, consciousness is not annihilated.” The AWARE study drew the following primary conclusions:

  • In some cases of cardiac arrest, memories of visual awareness compatible with so called out-of-body experiences may correspond with actual events.
  • A number of NDErs may have vivid death experiences, but do not recall them due to the effects of brain injury or sedative drugs on memory circuits.
  • The recalled experience surrounding death merits a genuine investigation without prejudice.
  • Studies have also been done on the widely reported phenomenon of near-death experiences (NDE). Experiencers commonly report being transported to a different “realm” or “plane of existence” and they have been shown to display a lasting positive aftereffect on most experiencers.

Coprolith – Putrescence Review By Steel Druhm

Steel Druhm can never get enough rancid, rotten death. That’s probably why I had a large-capacity rotpit installed on my property, and why I maintain front-row seats at the local autopsy theater. Thus, I welcome what Canada’s Coprolith bring to the charnel house on their Putrescence debut. This is scuzzy, lo-fi, low-I.Q. death for the creeps who worship the vomitorious sounds of Autopsy, Grave, Incantation, and older acts like massively underappreciated Finnish maniacs Demigod.1 Taking many crucial cues from early Autopsy, Coprolith blend harrowing doom with blistering OSDM, and everything feels filthy, infectious, and corrupted. It’s a moldy oldy recipe, but in the hands of some truly sick twists, it can still fuck up your shit, as it does here.

You won’t spend much time wondering where Putrescence is heading either. Opener “Sentenced to the Grave” rips the band-aid off, along with a good portion of healthy flesh, as it brings a teeming, writhing mass of moist and gruesome death metal to life. Melding mid-tempo caveman grinding segments that feel massive and unstoppable with doomy plods that crush your will to thrive, this is like a leaden dead weight on your puny shoulders, but there’s a vibrancy and energy to it even when things are stuck in the meat mulch. Some well-timed upticks of speed with blastbeats and cement-mixer riffs keep you alert and following the funeral program. Add some utterly inhuman, reverb-heavy death croaks and vomit noises, and you’re in the grave business! I especially enjoy the eerie harmonies on the song’s back end. The title track is more of the same, informed by gruelingly meatheaded grooves and ponderous doom marching. The guitars offer just enough variety to keep things interesting, spiked by rabid flare-ups of aural violence.

The album centerpiece is the 7-minute “Defiling Incantation,” which Coprolith certainly do with gusto. It’s a lumbering, unwieldy piece of death-doom that recalls the best moments of Incantation and Winter without copying them, and there’s a dark, sludgy, blackened edge to everything that feels evil and unsettling. How do you follow something like that? With a hyper-aggressive piece of scummy, molten death that could have been on Post Mortem’s classic Coroner’s Office release. “Birthed by Remorseless Flames” packs top-notch Neanderthal power chugs and keeps things heavy enough to liquefy and evacuate the contents of your bowels. This is one of my favorite death ditties of 2026 because it feels olde, bold, and heavy like a two-ton anvil dipped in shit, duck fat, and motor oil. I don’t even care that it almost hits the 6-minute mark because it’s just so greasy and unappetizing. At a skinny 34 minutes, every track is morbidly a beast. Bloat is carefully avoided through well-timed tempo shifts, and even the longer cuts avoid feeling too long. The production is deranged genius, essentially recreating the horrific sound of Autopsy classics like Severed Survival and Acts of the Unspeakable. It’s grimy, smutty shit-muck, but damn does it hit the feelz bone with a 10 lb. sledge. There’s enough filth-gunk in the sound to please any hardcore death metal elitist, and you can still hear what the band is actually doing!

Guitarists A.K. and J.H. throw all manner of vile, befouled riffs at you, all with teeth that go for the nether-regions. The doomy leads are nigh-irresistible and will plant you in the earth like a flag pole. The urgent, in-your-face riffage feels jagged, ragged, and dripping with tetanus ichor. This sounds old as fook, but just as toxic as anything new-fangled being released today. To this nightmare sauce, add the obscene croaks, moans, and wretches of K.D., who seems to be broadcasting from some Lovecraftian dimension you want no part of. These unholy vocals add a whole layer of poo-crust to the already appallingly impure sound. Bassist A.M. delivers a lot of mass and heft to the sound profile, coming forward at times to shake your bladder batter into stiff peaks. All this is undergirded by the reliably massive drumming of A.M., who knows when to pound you into assdust and when to oppress your brain jelly. This crew knows what they’re about and how to harsh your mellows.

Coprolith have the rotten stuff, and they fling it all over the place. Putrescence is a nasty piece of soiled work and a loving tribute to the kings of death and death-doom. If you want to marinate in the medical waste barrel, this is the slurry to soak in. It will give you a loathsome disease, but you’ll enjoy the entire incubation period. That, my friends, is what good death metal can do for you/to you! GAG!

В логах Envoy - флаг UF и upstream_reset_before_response_started{connection_timeout} . То есть ingress-nginx просто перестал отвечать. Дальше - два часа разбора и довольно красивая цепочка причин, которая началась с банального reload, а закончилась на том, как ядро считает лимит потоков при старте виртуалки.

A reviewer agent we were testing inlined a Gitea token into a Bash command. Then ran `env` for good measure. Two tool-call records, headed for SQLite plaintext.

Fix: value-based redaction at rest. Every row scanned before it lands; literal secret values become [redacted:VAR_NAME]. Match is on the value, so operator typos get caught too.

Real Gitea + third-party MCP + Telegram, closed-loop dev workflow. During the merge, the agent ran `env` with the token inlined. The runtime made it structurally harmless: value-based redaction at rest, 0 literal token hits in the DB after the run.
