It's interesting, in the 60s, 70s and 80s with the looming threat of the cold war post-apocalyptic fiction often depicted a dark red sky filled with nuclear fallout, mutant humans roaming and a scorched earth that could never recover.
The 90s and 00s moved to less nuclear and lots of zombies, slow or fast, sometimes clever, variations on how zombies exist, and we started getting more of the human story around dealing with this new world. We'd also get a lot of baddies - horrible people who now thrive being in control with no accountability.
Now in the 10s and 20s it's a more subtle, less violent future. A lot of fiction revolves around a flu or illness that calmly just wipes out the majority of the population, and the ones left alive live in peace. A slower pace of life, going back to old ways of doing things.
The world is so intense now, there is so much information and bad news every moment. The escape is in a simple life. No capitalism, no baddies.
